The core of awnings and shade structures are made from specialty fabrics, which over time can fade, tear, rip, or even grow mildew and mold. It’s important that you take care of your drop screen, awning, or patio cover. Inspecting your shade structure monthly will help your investment last. But, remember fabrics, even specialty fabrics, wear out over time.
Here are some things you should look for to see if you need to replace your shade structure:

  • Rips and Tears: You can fix small rips and tears but if your shade structure has multiple or even one large rip or tear, it might be time to replace it.
  • Mold & Mildew: With regular cleaning, your awning will last. But if you see mold and mildew growing and you can’t get rid of it, it’s time to get a new awning.
  • Structural Damage: If your shade structure’s frame is damaged, you might need to get that fixed or replaced.
  • Fading: If the color of your shade structure is fading, this might mean it’s special fade resistant qualities as well as other features are worn down and it might be time to think about a new one.
  • Scratches: If you have drop screens or vinyl curtains and you see multiple scratches you will want to look into getting replacements. After all, if you have a business that utilizes vinyl curtains, you don’t want customers to see worn down materials.
  • Loosened Tension: If you have a shade sail or other tension structure and it’s losing its tension, you might want to see if you need to have it fixed or replaced.
  • Fraying: This isn’t like having rips or tears. Fraying is when the fabric starts to come apart or worn at the edges. If this is happening it’s definitely time to get a new shade structure.
Remember, cleaning and caring for your shade structure is the best way to make your investment last. If you have questions about whether or not you need to replace your shade structure, call your local awning shop for advice.
