UV Ray Protection: How Awnings & Shade Structures can Help

January 23, 2016

We all know that ultraviolet rays can be harmful to our bodies. But what exactly are ultraviolet rays (UV)? Well according to NASA, there are three regions of the ultraviolet spectrum: near ultraviolet (NUV), the far ultraviolet (FUV), and the extreme ultraviolet (EUV). So what does this mean? Basically, these UV rays have shorter wavelengths than light and are not visible to the naked eye. Essentially, we can’t see UV rays.

NASA further explains that the sun emits all different wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum but that ultraviolet waves are what hurts our skins and causes sunburns. So how can we protect ourselves from UV rays?
Here’s a quick list:

  • Use sunscreen
  • Wear hats and long sleeves
  • Stay in the shade
  • Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes

There are also other ways to protect yourself that involve not wearing or applying anything to your body. This is where shade structures like awnings and patio covers can help. Sometimes we’re so focused on what we put on our bodies for protection that we forget we can utilize objects like umbrellas to shade ourselves when we’re walking. Or if we’re lounging in our backyards we can sit under an awning, patio cover, or shade sail.

Shade structures are often designed to protect people from UV rays. The fabric of the shade structure is typically made of a specialty textile that is developed with UV ray resistant properties. The textile basically repels the UV rays. So while you’re sitting under that shade structure during a sunny day, you can be assured that you’re protected from the sun’s UV rays.

Also, keep in mind that awnings or patio covers also protect your home. If you’re shading your home you’re keeping your furniture from fading in the sunlight and helping to keep out those pesky UV rays. And remember, shade structures – when installed properly – can help reduce your energy costs.
