If you own an awning then you already know it’s a valuable addition to your home. Awnings protect you and your loved ones from UV rays, provides shade, and helps keep your home cool. But, did you know you can accent and customize your awning with your own personal touch?

Once your awning is installed, you can do a number of things to give it personality and flare. Why not add some character to this extension of your home? Here are a few things you can do to customize your awning:
  • Use distinctive or patterned fabrics.
  • String up lanterns. (Check with your manufacturer to make sure this is okay).
  • Hang wind chimes.
  • Wrap the frame with things like Christmas lights. (Again, check with your manufacturer).
  • Add garlands of ribbon. Colorful ribbons or other type of fabrics dangling from your awning or patio cover can really add a beautiful touch to your backyard.
  • Use decorations that speak to your creative side. For example you can place gnomes or other garden objects at the base of the awning’s frame.
Really, you can be as creative as you want. You can string up ribbons and lights together. You can hang objects like bird feeders. You can even match your outdoor furnishings with your awning’s color scheme and create an ambience your family can enjoy. But remember, always check with your manufacturer to see if what you want to do to your awning is okay. (Not all awnings are made equally).

One way to customize your awning is also to make it a family activity. Ask your kids and your spouse what they would like to see in the backyard. This can be a fun way to bond with your family and add each of their styles to the ambiance of your home.

If you don’t already have an awning installed then keep in mind you can be creative from the start. You can choose patterns, colors, and even think about the type of shade structure you want to install. If you choose a traditional awning you can play with the colors and styles. If you choose a shade sail installation then you can layer these tension structures to create a beautiful architectural design. (Often times this kind of shade sail construction is seen at businesses, restaurants, and school yards or playgrounds).
So remember, creativity and imagination are all that you need to start customizing your awning to your taste and style.
