Fade Resistant Fabrics: Why it Matters

Did you know the fabric in your shade structure, outdoor furniture, and even your boat covers are designed to be fade resistant, among other many things? You might be wondering, why is fade resistance so important when it comes to things like an awning or patio cover? Well, the answer is pretty straight forward; the color will last.

Awnings and other shade structures are outside, 24-hours a day, seven days a week. That means the fabric is being bombarded by the sun’s rays every, single, day. It’s like when you leave a shirt or other cloth item in your car, eventually, it fades. The same can happen to an awning fabric if it’s not made to be fade resistant.

So why should you care if the color in your fabric fades? Here are a few reasons you should keep in mind:
  • Aesthetics: color fading can ruin the look of your shade structure. If you have an awning at a restaurant or other business, the last thing you want is your customers noticing the faded fabric; it’s just not appealing.
  • Costs/Savings: you save in the long run. If you have to replace the fabric in your awning due to fading, it can get expensive. But if you have fade resistant fabric, you can save yourself the headache.
  • Fabric Strength: the strength of your fabric could potentially weaken as the color fading gets worse and worse.

Fade resistance in an awning or other shade structure fabric is essential. Remember, the color and pop of your awning is what makes it stand out; don’t let it fade in the sunlight. An awning with stunning color will make an impression your guests and customers will remember.

I was talking to my husband about our home the other day, and we both realized that we don't actually spend a lot of time outside in the backyard. This is probably because we don't have much shade from the sun, so we are thinking about getting a canopy that will make it easier to have friends over for parties. It is good to know that a fade-resistant canopy is so important so that the color will last over time.
