Shade Fabrics 101: Why it Matters

Did you know your awning’s fabric is a specialty textile that has been designed for the outdoors? Shade fabrics are a unique set of materials that are developed to withstand the rigors of wind, rain, and heat.

When it comes to an awning or other shade product, the textile that makes up the membrane of the structure is made to be UV ray resistant, mold and mildew resistant, tear resistant, and more. So why are shade fabrics so different from your run-of-the-mill textile? Why does it even matter?

For starters, shade fabrics are unique in their construction. Designed to be strong, tight on the frame, and durable, shade fabrics are the most important part of your awning or patio cover. Shade fabrics differ from other textiles because they feature, but are not limited to the following properties:

  • Waterproof
  • Mold & Mildew Resistant
  • UV Ray Resistant
  • Flame Retardant
  • Scratch Resistant
  • Stain Resistant
  • Stable Dimensions

So why do these features matter? Why should shade fabric be so unique in its development? For starters, shade fabrics need to last and for stand the test of time, they should be made for the long haul. Who wants an awning that will fall apart in just one year? Remember, awnings and other shade structures are investments and replacing them ever year is costly and time consuming. That’s why creating an awning with the right fabric matters.

Awning shops get their shade fabrics from suppliers in the specialty textiles industry. These suppliers engineer unique, quality fabrics that are designed to be used in shade structures. In fact, if you’re interested in an awning, you should ask your installer what kind of fabric they’re using in your shade structure. You want to be sure that the quality will last and see if the fabric has a warranty; most good fabrics do.

Remember, you can also do some research on your own and visit the Professional Awning Manufacturers Association to learn more about shade fabrics. Also, just in case you’re wondering, shade fabrics for residential and commercial uses are pretty much the same. So if you’re a business or a homeowner, knowing about shade fabrics and why it matters is important, no matter your industry.
