Shade Fabrics 101: Why it Matters

3/10/2017

Did you know your awning’s fabric is a specialty textile that has been designed for the outdoors? Shade fabrics are a unique set of materials that are developed to withstand the rigors of wind, rain, and heat.

When it comes to an awning or other shade product, the textile that makes up the membrane of the structure is made to be UV ray resistant, mold and mildew resistant, tear resistant, and more. So why are shade fabrics so different from your run-of-the-mill textile? Why does it even matter?
Picture
For starters, shade fabrics are unique in their construction. Designed to be strong, tight on the frame, and durable, shade fabrics are the most important part of your awning or patio cover. Shade fabrics differ from other textiles because they feature, but are not limited to the following properties:

  • Waterproof
  • Mold & Mildew Resistant
  • UV Ray Resistant
  • Flame Retardant
  • Scratch Resistant
  • Stain Resistant
  • Stable Dimensions

So why do these features matter? Why should shade fabric be so unique in its development? For starters, shade fabrics need to last and for stand the test of time, they should be made for the long haul. Who wants an awning that will fall apart in just one year? Remember, awnings and other shade structures are investments and replacing them ever year is costly and time consuming. That’s why creating an awning with the right fabric matters.

Awning shops get their shade fabrics from suppliers in the specialty textiles industry. These suppliers engineer unique, quality fabrics that are designed to be used in shade structures. In fact, if you’re interested in an awning, you should ask your installer what kind of fabric they’re using in your shade structure. You want to be sure that the quality will last and see if the fabric has a warranty; most good fabrics do.

Remember, you can also do some research on your own and visit the Professional Awning Manufacturers Association to learn more about shade fabrics. Also, just in case you’re wondering, shade fabrics for residential and commercial uses are pretty much the same. So if you’re a business or a homeowner, knowing about shade fabrics and why it matters is important, no matter your industry.

Installing Drop Shades & Drop Curtains for Complete Weather Coverage

3/8/2017

When it comes to shade, we all think of a simple overhead covering like an awning and that’s it. However, there are several creative, unique ways to create shade for your business or home. In fact, the use of drop shades and curtains in shade structures is a great way to enhance the experience of customers and diners at your business.

But before continuing, what are drop shades and drop curtains? How are these even considered shade structures? Drop shades and drop curtains are basically extensions of an existing structure like an awning or patio cover. These extensions create an enclosed environment that protect people from the sun and inclement weather.

For example, if you have an outdoor dining area, an awning is a great way to cover your guests. But, if it rains or its windy, or the sun is shining from an angle that your diners are subject to the sun’s harmful UV rays, the awning won’t cut it anymore. That’s where drop screens and curtains come into play.

A drop shade is basically an extra layer of textile, usually a form of mesh, that acts like a window. Typically drop shades are attached to awnings or even the inside of a window. These shades are then rolled down or extended when necessary and provide extra shade.

Drop curtains are like drop shades but have a little more flexibility in the fabric. Much like indoor curtains, drop curtains can be designed with folds, ridges, and other aesthetically pleasing effects. Drop curtains can be tied together when not in use.

Both drop curtains and drop shades provide protection from the sun and inclement weather. These are excellent accents to any awning. Even at home or at your business, these shade accents bring out your creative side, provide an ambiance for your guests, and protect them from the wind, rain, and sunlight.

Remember, your awning is versatile. Also, remember that drop shades are a great way to keep your business cool and shaded without having to install an awning. Finally, you can always consult your local awning shop for more information about these creative, fun shade options.

Commercial Awnings: Why Bother?

As a business owner, you’re always worried about the bottom line. You’re looking at where to cut costs and where to spend. You’re thinking about what will help your business grow. That’s where a commercial awning comes in. It’s something we don’t think about as business owners and it’s certainly not something we’d consider as a moneymaker. But here’s the thing…
Picture
Commercial awnings offer more than just electric bill saving shade. They offer a canvas for your business and an aesthetic for your business that sets you apart from the competition. But what does this all really mean? Here’s a quick list of things of why you should you bother thinking about installing a commercial awning:

·      Advertising Potential: Commercial awnings offer you a canvas space where you can print your logo, message, or business name for everyone to see. The fixed awning will always be there and won’t cost you a monthly fee like some ads do. This fixed ad will be there, rain or shine, working for you to get customers through your door.
·      Standing Out: Commercial awnings come different shapes and sizes, colors, and designs. With the right touch, you can make your business stand out from the rest. Imagine your logo or design popping off a beautiful blue fabric while your competition has nothing to show. Commercial awnings are a simple, effective, and creative way to advertise your business and stand out from the crowd.
·      Shade: This is the most obvious benefit of a commercial awning. Shade can provide guests a reason to come in, reduce your energy bills, and protect your customers from UV rays.

Commercial awnings are great for restaurants, shops, and clothing stores as well as other businesses. With the right design, color, and flare, a commercial awning can dress up your business and make it look appealing. Eye-catching designs are a great way to boost customer traffic through your door.

Remember, consult your local awning shop for more information about the types and styles of commercial awnings available today. Not all commercial awnings need to be fixed shade structures. Some can be retractable. Some can have added features like drop screens or curtains – these are especially well suited for restaurants.
