We’re excited to share one of our most ambitious projects to date: the design, fabrication, and installation of over 700 custom shade sails for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s state-of-the-art bus charging station.
The Challenge
As the MTA continues its transition to a greener, all-electric bus fleet, they needed a large-scale solution to protect their vehicles during the charging process. Electric buses require significant time at charging stations, and exposure to direct sunlight can elevate internal temperatures, reduce battery efficiency, and accelerate wear on vehicle components.
Beyond the technical requirements, this project demanded flawless execution. The MTA’s charging infrastructure is critical to keeping Los Angeles moving, and any delays could impact their entire fleet operations. The general contractor needed a partner who could handle the complexity of a 700+ unit installation while maintaining strict adherence to project timelines. That’s where we came in.
Our Solution
American Awning & Blind Co. was selected to deliver a comprehensive shade sail system that would cover hundreds of charging bays. Our team took this project from concept to completion, handling every detail:
- Custom Design & Engineering: We worked closely with the MTA and their general contractor to design a shade sail system that met structural requirements, provided maximum coverage, and could withstand the elements for years to come.
- Precise Measurement & Fabrication: With over 700 individual shade sails to produce, precision was critical. Our team measured each installation point and fabricated sails to exact specifications, ensuring perfect fitment across the entire facility.
- Strategic Vendor Coordination: A project of this magnitude requires exceptional supply chain management. We partnered closely with our trusted vendors to source and secure all necessary hardware—from high-grade tensioning systems to durable mounting brackets. When supply chain challenges emerged, our established relationships and proactive communication kept materials flowing and the project moving forward.
- Seamless Installation & Project Management: Coordinating the installation of 700+ shade sails across an active MTA facility required meticulous planning and flawless execution. We partnered with another subcontractor who handled the installation of the sails in carefully scheduled phases, ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing operations while maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety.
- On-Time Delivery, Every Phase: We understand that large infrastructure projects operate on tight timelines with multiple contractors depending on each other’s progress. Our team maintained a rigorous schedule throughout every phase—from initial design approval through final installation—ensuring the general contractor could complete their work without delays. This commitment to reliability is what sets us apart on large-scale commercial projects.
The Impact
Today, hundreds of MTA buses charge under the protection of our shade sails, staying cooler and more efficient while reducing strain on the fleet. This project showcases what’s possible when expertise, coordination, and commitment come together. The shade sails not only protect valuable city assets but also contribute to the longevity and performance of the MTA’s sustainable transportation initiative.
