At American Awning & Blind Co., we pride ourselves on tackling challenging projects that showcase our expertise in custom awning solutions. Our recent installation at the prestigious 1 Hotel in West Hollywood represents one of our most complex and rewarding projects to date.
The Challenge
Harriet’s, the exclusive rooftop bar and restaurant perched on the 10th floor of the 1 Hotel, needed a sophisticated weather protection system that wouldn’t compromise their stunning panoramic views of Los Angeles. The solution required not only aesthetic excellence but also structural integrity to withstand rooftop wind conditions while complementing the hotel’s eco-luxury design ethos.
In 2023 the 1 Hotel in West Hollywood approached our team at American Awning & Blind Co. about the possibility of designing a custom retractable roof for their 10th story open air bar/restaurant called Harriet’s. For years the owners of Harriet’s had been bringing in a temporary tent every winter to cover their space for the rainy season in Southern California. Known as a late night hot spot for Angelenos and celebrities like comedian Dave Chapelle (who has a corner dedicated to him), this restaurant was in serious need of a rainproof solution that could be deployed at the push of a button.

After discussing various options with ownership, we finally settled on a flat retractable roof utilizing Corradi USA’s awning system integrated with various other stationary awnings and panels attached to a structural steel frame.
With help from the engineering and architecture firm that designed the hotel, we were able to design and engineer attachment points to the building. From there plans were submitted to the city and after a year and half, we were ready for construction.
Coordination was key as we brought in several partners to help with concrete scanning, craning, and installation of the structural steel framework.

Our team worked quickly to install each element of the system as the venue was only able to stay closed for a short window of time right before Grammy Week.

The design team at Harriert’s opted to go with a light green Ferrari 502 fabric that matched an accent color for the restaurant. Other elements included dark brown 502 fabric for stationary panels as well as dark brown and bronze elements throughout the system. The final result is a stunning system that allows the staff to open and close the roof at the push of button allowing rooftop access to this beautiful with views from West Hollywood south throughout Los Angeles and to the Pacific Ocean.
