Fall & Your Awning: Taking Care of your Shade Structure in the Off Season

Summer is officially behind us and we’re cooling down in this 2017 Fall season. But, what does this mean for your awning? Whether you have one in your backyard or over your windows, taking care of your awning in off season is just as important as it is in the summer.

You might be asking, “Why should I bother when I’m not using it?” Well, just because you’re not enjoying the shade or protection of your awning during the Fall season, doesn’t mean that your awning isn’t still doing its job or that it can be left alone. In fact, during the off season, you really want to make sure you’re taking care of your awning because that’s when dirt, debris, mold, mildew, and water can do damage.

In the summer, things are dry and the occasional storm or drizzle can happen. But, for the most part, your awning is dry and happy in the summer. But when Fall rolls around, or worse yet, winter, that’s when the wind blows and the rain pours. This means the likelihood of debris and other not so savory things can collect on your awning or damage it.

Here’s a few tips on how you can take care of your awning during the Fall:

·      Clean: This is the best way to keep your awning looking great. Cleaning your awning involves using nonabrasive materials and soft liquid detergent. Brush off debris gently. Let your awning dry completely before you take it down. (If that’s what you want to do).
·      Inspect: Remember, you should always inspect your awning at least once a month to see if there are any rips, holes, or tears. If you plan to leave your awning up for the off seasons, then be sure to inspect it often and clean it when possible.
·      Fix: If you find any rips, holes, or tears, have it fixed. Also, make sure your frame is in good condition as well.
·      Store: Storing your awning is also an option for the Fall and Winter seasons. Make sure you keep the awning in a dry area and that it’s clean before you put it away.
·      Fabric Replacement: If your awning’s fabric is looking dull and worn, have it replaced. Old fabric can rip and tear a little more easily.

Taking care of your awning doesn’t take that much effort and keeping it in good working order means it will last longer. Remember, you can always talk to your awning installer for more information on how to take care of your shade structure.
