Permits and Construction: What you Need to Know

February 25, 2019

Construction is costly, time consuming, and stressful. So, when it comes to doing it right, always remember to check and see what permits you need to build your project. Otherwise, you might have to redo the job and spend that much more time, money, and effort.

So, what do you need to do and how do you do find out what you need in terms of permits for you project? Here’s a quick check list:

  • Home Owner’s Association: This is an important one! Most of us forget to check with our association about their guidelines and restrictions. So, before you start any work, make sure you’re in compliance, otherwise you can face fines and still have to redo the job. Remember, construction and remodeling projects are both subject to permits and approvals.
  • City: The city might also have certain requirements and permitting processes. Go to your city’s web site and call the planning department to see what you might need to start your project.
  • County: This might seem odd, but you never know. The county sometimes has permit processes for certain projects, especially if they are commercial in nature. So, call your county’s planning and development office and ask them what permits you might need for your construction project.
  • State: This one is odd to think about as well, but sometimes, the state may have some permit requirements. If you’re building a stadium, hotel, or other large project, this is where you might run into getting a permit from your state.

Remember, permits are part of the first steps of developing your project. Without those, you’re stuck in the mud. So, always check the above list to see if you’ve covered all your bases. Keep in mind, you also have to follow building codes and guidelines. Thus, using a licensed and insured contractor who can help you through the process – like we do here at American Awning & Blind Co. – is a great way to avoid the permit headache.
